Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash

While developing his solo project, JC traveled to the UK, where he met the well-known house/dance music duo Basement Jaxx and ended up collaborating on a track for their album Kish Kash, which was released in October 2003. "Plug It In" was mentioned as a stand-out track in many reviews and was released as a single in early 2004. The Jaxx subsequently produced a track ("Shake It") for Schizophrenic.

J.C. Chasez of N*SYNC contributes lead vocals to "Plug It In", easily the standout track on this collection.

Amazon.co.uk
"Plug It In", the collaboration with JC Chasez (Justin "too busy or expensive" Timberlake's former bandmate), is unquestionably Kish Kash's party anthem.

Meanwhile, ‘N Sync's JC Chasez remakes himself as a sort of electro-punk Michael Jackson on "Plug It In"...

allmusic.com
*NSYNC's JC Chasez is a surprising success on the beguiling "Plug It In" (though the final few minutes are so close to Prince the track becomes more rip-off than homage).

Barcode
‘Plug It In’ provides more classy funk fare, with a guest appearance from former N’Sync member, JC Chasez, another track that demands repeat plays.

BBC and Radio1
Ex N Sync-er JC Chasez provides the falsetto on the raucous "Plug It In".

Beardscratchers.com
The funky house feel of Plug It In features de rigueur falsetto male vocals from a former member of N*Sync, but the chorus is especially uplifting (especially on the first hearing) with attractive keyboard chops. It's unashamedly cheesy, but has some enjoyable Casio keyboard breaks and a seemingly obligatory vocoder.

Blender
"Plug It In" pitches Chasez into scabrous, mutant R&B, with a stabbing riff drawn from hardcore rave.

Big Shot
*Nsync’s JC Chasez strikes again, delivering the insanely bombastic "Plug It In"

Boston Herald
Former N'Sync-er J.C. Chasez checks in with a surprisingly fresh and funky performance on "Plug It In.''

Brock Press
The CD sports an impressive spread of guest singers from the pop superstar JC Chasez of N'Sync fame to goth-punk icon Siouxsie Sioux. Originally, I had questioned the quality and continuity of a CD that could feature both a mainstream pop-icon and a gothic diva. Though by the end, Chasez's lyrical talent was moulded around Jaxx's ability to make anything work and Sioux's vocals vaulted the general quality of the CD with contrast.

Canada.com
Even J.C. Chasez drops in to add some boy band falsetto to the electro-vamp "Plug It In."

Cavalier Daily
While we're discussing imitation, however, there is no excuse for a JC Chasez appearance on the record, but on "Plug It In" he provides lead vocals.

Citypages
With its all-celebrity guest vocals, Kish Kash is almost a warped reflection of those all-star big money hip-hop collaborations--teaming up with JC Chasez of NSYNC on "Plug It In" could be a defiant aesthetic statement that a dance track doesn't need Justin.

Cleveland Free Times
J.C. Chasez comes off as desperately trying to mime Justin Timberlake.

CMJ.com
J.C. Chasez is totally in sync with what the Jaxx have in mind for him on “Plug It In.”

Cokemachineglow.com
While a couple of the choices for special guests confuse me (JC Chasez? What the hell, guys?), Kish Kash is a pleasingly consistent record, easily enjoyable from beginning to end with little to no track skipping.
...the JC track, 'Plug It In', would have made the list if the lead vocals had been handled by someone else...

The Collegian (University of Tulsa)
JC Chasez guests on "Plug It In," a hyper-sexual Backstreet send-up, but boasting superior songwriting and production.

Commercialappeal.com
There's compensation for the uncharacteristic number of clunkers, part of it coming in the grainy wash of a sensual "Right Here's the Spot" featuring Meshell Ndegeocello and the entrenched bluster of a raw "Plug It In" featuring vocals by a branching-out JC Chasez of 'N Sync.

Dagsavisen
JC does “Plug It In”, which is about the entire celebrity culture.

Dallas Observer
They almost get you to take 'N Sync singer JC Chasez seriously on the R&B-industrial stomper "Plug It In"...

The Declaration
The spaceship returns and brings with it JC Chasez in a cooler, more narrative track issuing reverberations that echo through your loins in spasms.

The biggest surprise here is the former N’Sync member JC Chasez whom no one (apart this two whom were asked to produce his solo work) expected to deliver an ace take on Prince to equal/rival Justin Timberlake’s Michael Jackson obsession; if ‘Plug It In’ does not move you, your feelings need new power-cells.

DIW Magazine
NSYNC pretty boy JC Chasez drops his polished pop act for a Prince-influenced performance on the new-wave party-starting "Plug It In"

Dotmusic.com
The equally truculent 'Plug It In' features the unlikely squealing guest appearance of former N*Sync member JC Chasez.

Earlash
J.C. Chasez, of N* Sync fame, does a great job on the synth-heavy “Plug It In.” This song in particular manages to be subtle and creative while still retaining the infectiousness of both the Jaxx’s and Chasez’s earlier work.

Edmonton Sun
It's an eccentric range from the sultry meanness of Meshell Ndegeocello rapping on Right Here's the Spot - and indeed it is - to Siouxsie Sioux her own bad self punking up the funk on the title track, to the romping Plug It In with J.C. Chavez, the 'NSync member whose stock just went up.

Electric New Paper
The duo did take in ex-'N Sync member JC Chasez, though. But they managed to work out a mean Prince-esque falsetto from him on the boisterous Plug It In. And it really doesn't sound half-bad. But the best thing they probably did recently was to turn down Victoria 'Posh Spice' Beckham's pleas for a collaboration.

Entertainment Today
“Plug It In” races breakneck through its minimal, echoey keyboards while former ’Nsync-er J.C.Chasez contributes atypically restrained vocals to the swirling dance floor maelstrom.

Entertainment Weekly
But here [Chasez] is, on the Jaxx's third disc, humping the techno-dance whirlybird of "Plug it In" as if he wanted to make everyone forget Justin Timberlake's solo hits.

Dang, they even got 'N Sync's JC Chasez to rock the party with his techno-dance debut on "Plug It In."

The best song and one of the best over all, is the visit from Nsync with JC Chasez.

N*Sync's J.C. Chavez gets some Timberlake-style cred fronting 'Plug It In.'

Herald Sun
'N Sync's JC Chasez ups his cred on the hectic Plug It In, complete with Prince-style vocals his falsetto-loving bandmate would be proud of.

Juice
R&B songstress Meshell Ndegeocello pops in to vocal the especially funky 'Right Here's The Spot' while NSync muppet JC Chasez sounds good on 'Plug It In'.

There's compensation for the uncharacteristic number of clunkers, part of it coming in the grainy wash of a sensual "Right Here's the Spot" featuring Meshell Ndegeocello, and the entrenched bluster of a raw "Plug It In" featuring vocals by a branching-out JC Chasez of 'N Sync.

LA City Beat
“Plug It In,” appropriately, places JC Chasez in an outrageously campy musical, and you can imagine him surrounded by ripped muscle boys tipping their hats in unison to his falsetto.

Las Vegas Mercury
Similarly disparate and complementary to each other are guest artists--mostly vocalists--such as Me'Shell Ndegeocello (on two numbers), N'Sync's J.C. Chasez and Mercury Prize-winning Dizzee Rascal.

Basement Jaxx's Prince obsession returns on the Missy Elliott-styled "Right Here's The Spot" and "Plug It In" (with NSYNC's JC Chavez).

London Times
J. C. Chasez, the former N*Sync sidekick of Justin Timberlake, turns up on the raucous stomper Plug it In, having approached Basement Jaxx to produce his own solo album.

Memphis Flyer
"Plug It In," with Chasez on vocals, sounds like an overpowering bizarro-world version of "U Got the Look."

Metro Weekly
N’Sync-er J C Chasez shines out of Justin’s shadow on the blazing “Plug It In.”

Metropulse.com
So the eccentric selection of guests (Meshell N'degeocello, Siouxsie Sioux, J.C. Chavez from N'Sync) doesn't signal any significant deviation from the Basement Jaxx formula: busy neo-disco, heavy on the hooks, light on What It All Means. Chavez shows Justin Timberlake isn't the only N'Syncer who can cop from Michael Jackson.

Miami New Times
"Plug It In," featuring JC Chasez, is the sonic descendant of Rooty's "Where's Your Head At" with its gritty distended synths and rousing chorus.

Top tunes: Plug It In, Cish Cash, Hot & Cold
Who's on the album? The biggest hitters on Kish Kash: JC Chasez: 27, oddly named former NSYNC intern, hasn't done as well as that Dustin Timbersnake fella.

MOJO
Justin Timberlake fellow traveller JC Chasez pipes his way thru the Euro-rave blasts of "Plug It In." Truly, a glorious noise.

Movement Magazine
Extra points also go to Basement Jaxx for maintaining their credibility while still featuring JC Chavez [sic] on a track. If Chavez can hold those notes on his own material, he will be giving Justin Timberlake a run for his money.

MusicOMH
JC Chavez [sic] (the one who wasn't Justin or had the humorous surname in 'N Sync) gives it some JT on the saucy bust of Plug It In...

Muso's Guide
Ex-N. Sync vocalist JC Chasez is chucked in at the deep end on the manic Plug it in, shiny meets scutter funk (they should have got the Timberlake, although he'd probably cost too much these days and is too busy recording for that fine food establishment McDonalds!).

Needlerop eZine
Sultry, Dirty beats combined with an impressive vocals from Michelle N'degecello, Siouxie Sioux and dare I say a great track from NSYNC's very own JC Chasez...even I can't believe I'm saying that but it's so true!

New York Times
Mr. Chasez seems intent on turning himself into a first-rate disco-diva, and his thin, twitchy falsetto sounds great on "Plug It In," an equally thin, twitchy track full of unexpected breaks and playful electronic squiggles.

New Zealand Herald
Chasez's Plug It In is as Jacko-funky as anything bandmate Justin Timberlake has managed with the Neptunes.

"Plug It In" bathes J.C. Chasez in a tide of sighs, brutish synths, and whipsmart drum breaks.

Proper pop courtesy of 'N Sync's JC Chasez.

Portland Mercury
The boys in Jaxx know their soloists, swiping vox from Dizzee Rascal and even N*SYNC's JC Chasez, whose aching, Drakkar Noir falsetto gets the elevator shoe from the Jaxx's funky, chunky synth low-end.

Pulp
On "Plug It In," Chasez comes off as an intricate part of the Jaxx dance machine, rather than the engine, on the pulsing anthem.

Q magazine
"Plug It In" (featuring NSyncer JC Chasez, no less) is an instant classic fuelled by nitrobass, falsetto vocals and rave synths.

Seattle Weekly
"Plug It In," featuring 'N Sync's JC Chasez, imagines boy-band pop (don't let anyone tell you this is R&B) as big beat. It rocks out - because it can, like everything else here - with drums like great globs of mercury splashing into your eyes.

SFweekly.com
Chasez's high pitches are looped and messed with to an agreeable point of no recognition on "Plug It In."

Slant
*NSync’s JC Chasez unleashes a falsetto howl over “Plug It In” that should give Justin something to worry about.

Spin
And as always, there are two drop-dead singles. The first, “Plug It In,” lets ’N Sync free agent JC Chasez step to Justin Timberlake, wrapping his falsetto around a rave-powered chorus that stands you on your toes, then kicks you in the ass.

Just as you’re wondering where your ‘Where’s Your Head At’ is (at), along comes JC Chasez on guest vocals: “Plug it IN, plug it IN, bay-BEE!”

JC Chasez steps up for “Plug It In” and proves that Justin wasn’t the only cool one in *N Sync.

Syracuse Daily Orange
"Plug It In" found its heart and soul the day J.C. Chasez, of *NSYNC fame, happened to wander by.

Tastemusic
plug it in (feat. jc chasez) sounds like the tune that'll be the crowd favourite this time round, resplendent in its slightly sinister synths and moody vocals.

Time Off
The album features some pretty amazing guest vocalists, including the sublime Meshell Ndegeocello on the Latin stormer 'Right Here's The Spot', flavour-of-the-month English raggamuffin Dizzie Rascal on the eastern-tinged 'Lucky Star' and sex goddess 'J C Chasez' on the downright funky 'Plug It In'.

Tulane Hullabaloo
Even though his solo career hasn't taken off so quickly, J.C. Chasez's vocal talents bring a lot to the up-tempo "Plug It In," another standout.

Twistandshout.com
One of the biggest surprises is the irresistible frantic rocker “Plug It In” featuring (the barely recognizable) JC Chasez of *Nsync.

Ubyssey
Another song on the CD is "Plug It In" featuring JC Chasez from N'Sync (no need to hate). Like his more successful counterpart, Justin Timberlake, JC is pretty much trying to sing like Michael Jackson.

UCSD Guardian
The success of these wide-ranged appearances, from *NSYNC-er JC Chasez to goth goddess Siouxsie Sioux, is astounding. Chasez brings ample life to "Plug It In," which features electric guitars slamming the insanely catchy chorus into your skull.

USA Today
'N Sync's JC Chasez adds real heft to Plug It In.

VIBE
The list of contributors is as diverse as their musical tastes: ’N Sync’s JC Chasez, alternative soul singer Meshell Ndegeocello, and Goth Queen Siouxie Sioux come together for this funky disc. Chasez runs with compelling vocals on the synthetic soul of “Plug It In,” while Sioux plays cool foil to the Hewlett-Packard beats of “Cish Cash.”

Village Voice
Maybe "Plug It In" vocalist J.C. Chasez (*NSync) and Siouxsie Sioux (Banshees), who sings "Cish Cash," are more used to the spotlight than Jenner was when the Rapture made Echoes a year ago, and therefore sound more at ease on their respective single-of-the-year candidates than he would.

Vue Weekly
Vocalists—and their attitude—play a huge role on Kish Kash, and it’s an impressive array. Me’shell Ndegeocello lends a sensuous howl to the swinging “Right Here’s the Spot” and “Feels Like Home,” while former ’N Sync dude JC Chasez actually out-cools Justin on the popping “Plug It In.”

Washington Post
Basement Jaxx even invited 'N Sync's J.C. Chasez to warble over "Plug It In," a surprisingly sensual and funky chant that's more in your face than anyone might have expected from a boy band alum.

Weekly Dig
This new one features Meshell Ndegeocello, 65-year-old Totlyn Jackson, JC Chasez (the rebel member of *NSync) and Siouxsie Sioux, among others.

Whisperinandhollerin.com
Then there's the superficially smoother, but no less dramatic "Plug It In", featuring JC Chasez and a loose detonator of a chorus and the strange twosome of "Tonight" and "Living Room", both of which utilise frantically-strummed Spanish/ Moorish guitar figures.

Windy City Times
While Justin Timberlake is off perfecting his Michael Jackson impression, N*Sync brother J C Chasez is perfecting his Prince with a little help from the Jaxx on "Plug It In."

XtraMSN
Ironically, successful collaboration number two is with (ahem) J C Chasez of (splutter) N'Sync on the electrically sexual 'Plug It In'.

Yale Herald
J.C. Chasez shows that he might be more than a boy-band afterthought on the kettle drum-driven "Plug It In," which could have been produced by a cracked-out Trent Reznor.
