BT
Emotional Technology

Modern Mozart
by Jason Cheah

If there is one artiste in the progressive house and electronica scene who can be regarded a genius of Mozart-ian levels, it is American trance pioneer Brian Transeau, aka BT.

His new album Emotional Technology is the latest milestone in a sonic trek and electronic innovation, and his marrying of music of many styles can be considered way ahead of his time.

…There are more collaborations, most significantly crossing into the pop world with JC Chasez, the other lead vocalist from US boyband ‘N Sync who co-wrote and sings lead on “The Force of Gravity,” although it is one of the few tracks here reminiscent of some of BT’s greatest dance floor anthems such as “Dreaming.”

Of course, the elements of progressive breaks and big beat is still evident with BT, it’s almost a trademark in his music, which has spanned the last decade.

Here is a consummate musical artiste who can keep your ears glued to the headphone for a whole album without a break. There’s even a bonus CD with six remixes of “Simply Being Loved.” Listen and be awed.

The Short List Prize for Music, JC Chasez, Basement Jaxx and Cher
by Doug Rule

WASHINGTON WIZARDS… First Kenna, then the Neptunes, and we’ve only just begun to cite native Washington-area dance-poppers making musical waves. See also JC Chasez, originally from Bowie, Md., but more famous as one-fifth of N’Sync. Hoping to follow in Justin Timberlake’s wake, Chasez’s own debut solo album, Schizophrenic (BMG), will be released in October. It should be as dance-oriented as expected, with production from Rodney Jerkins (Destiny’s Child, Whitney Houston) and dance artist and fellow Washington-native BT (N’Sync’s Pop). Chasez has also added his vocals to a track on Emotional Technology (Nettwerk), the latest album from Brian “BT” Transeau, whom we like to call a FODD, or high-school Friend of Deep Dish’s Ali Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi.

Big Shot - Kish Kash

Basement Jaxx / Kish Kash
(Astralwerks)

4 stars

…Kish Kash contains some of the most mind-blowing material the Jaxx have put forth yet. Check the title track, which features punk legend Siouxsie Sioux, for proof. The snare tries to outrace the thundering synth bass, while Sioux’s emphatic chorus - “You want it? You take it!” - could very well inspire looting.

The kiss-off track “Good Luck” opens the disc with a thrust. Featuring vocalist Lisa Kekaula of the Bellrays, the production, style and chord progressions sound like Missy Elliott producing Dusty Springfield - for Motown. Elsewhere, *Nsync’s JC Chasez strikes again, delivering the insanely bombastic “Plug It In,” and Meshell Ndegeocello cuts two tracks. “Right Here’s the Spot” busts a Funkadelic chorus between her suggestive raps, all over a throbbing disco groove. Her “Home,” on which she also plays bass, is a soothing, but unremarkable chillout tune that closes the disc.

Records of the Year
by David Browne

02. Basement Jaxx, Kish Kash (album)

Electronica is in a slump, but no one bothered to tell British mixmasters Felix Burton and Simon Ratcliffe. Insanely dense and creative, the Jaxx’s third sonic adventure is that rare creature - a DJ-driven, multiple-vocalist album that, thanks to the duo’s ever-churning grooves and nonstop left turns, magically coheres. They even make JC Chasez sound funky.
