Plug It In
Producer(s): Basement Jaxx
Writer(s): S. Ratcliffe, F. Buxton
Publisher(s): Universal Music
With its feisty new single, British duo Basement Jaxx (Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton) continues to blur the borders among modern rock, dance/ electronic and pop. This time around, ‘N Sync’s JC Chasez handles microphone duties. And if you didn’t know better, you would have no idea it was him. His vocals, which go from a sneer to a howl, perfectly suit the caustic, in-your-face beats. In a perfect world, radio would be on this single. But with today’s climate, it may first need to prove itself in a commercial for mobile phones. - MP

Part 1
Caller: I did a contest up in Virginia, at Hot 99.5, where it was a bitchslapping contest.
JC: [laughs] I remember this!
DJ: A what?!?
Caller: A bitchslap contest.
JC: Yeah, dude! These girls had to slap…like…bitchslap…[I assume he's making bitchslapping gestures during this pause]…and they got to come to the show!
Caller: Yep, I got a black eye and I busted her lip.
JC: You sure did!
Caller: But I won!
JC: Hell yeah, you did! [laughs]
DJ: Well, it’s good to know they’re doing quality radio in other cities.
Caller: Oh, of course, of course. My daughter actually got to hear the soundtrack. And you waved to her, and she started crying.
DJ: Excuse me, how do you explain that to your daughter? “Mommy got beat up so you could see JC do a soundtrack.”
Caller: She couldn’t believe it. She was like, “I can’t believe you did that, mom…..but I’m so glad you did!”

While ‘N Sync member Justin Timberlake was ruling pop radio last year, the group’s other lead vocalist, JC Chasez, immersed himself in the dance/electronic scene. In 2003, he collaborated with BT and Basement Jaxx and released the under-appreciated, beat-heavy single “Blowin’ Me Up (With Her Love).” Now, Chasez has returned with “Some Girls (Dance With Women),” a simmering, uptempo hip-pop track. Chasez’s subtle and sexed-up vocals are coupled with lyrics that are guaranteed to react with listeners. The song wears well with repeat plays; by the the third time around, the chorus is fully lodged in the brain. Chasez’s debut album, “Schizophrenic,” is out next month. - KC

…‘Plug It In’ provides more classy funk fare, with a guest appearance from former N’Sync member, JC Chasez, another track that demands repeat plays. Meanwhile, the slow burning ‘If I Ever Recover’ provides perfect respite from the furious pace, with its heartwarming strings and pads. Another highlight on the album has to be the punk-tinged, rocky ‘Cish Cash’, featuring Siousxie Soux on vocals. The album closes with a variety of tracks that aren’t quite as staggeringly enticing as the opening half of the album, but still enjoyable. Basement Jaxx are walking away with the dance music plaudits at the moment and deservedly so. Kish Kash is the most enjoyable Dance album I have heard for a decade, and is setting a new standard that Dance music in general will find very difficult to live up to.
