DJ: Ladies and gentlemen, JC Chasez!

[Audience cheers]

JC: Thank you very much.

DJ: Okay, well. I guess the fans have acknowledged you, JC. [Laughs]

JC: Yes indeed.

DJ: Welcome to Portland.

JC: Thank you very much for having me.

DJ: It’s a thrill to have you here. Uh, second - you’re working on your second solo album?

JC: Yeah, this is my sophomore record, yes.

DJ: Sophomore record. These fans, uh, just…some of these people were here…let’s, lets…

[Audience cheers]

DJ: Let’s go right here. Can hardly catch her breath. They’re just so thrilled to see you. Uh, first of all, tell us a little bit about your new album. You don’t have a title for it yet, right?

JC: Uh, kind of. I have a couple working titles but it seems like, uh, the latest one - I’m actually calling it Kate. This record is uh, is uh…a lot of these songs, I kind of developed this imaginary person named Kate, which I ended up writing this entire record about.

DJ: Mm hm.

JC: Everybody always asks me, you know, “Is this song about anybody in particular?” and not one song is about one person in particular, but maybe a few experiences that I’ve had. And so I kind of dreamt up this imaginary person, uh, and gave her a name, and the next thing you know this record seems to be a journey about this person.

DJ: Well, in this article here on VH1 - is this right? Your new single is about your girlfriend getting knocked up by another man?

JC: Uh…[Laughs]

[Audience laughs]

DJ: Is that right?

JC: Yeah.

DJ: Is that - did you say that?

JC: Yeah.

DJ: [Laughs] All right, just checkin’ to make sure that was you.

JC: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That’s one of the imaginary parts.

DJ: [Laughs] Well, also another cool thing, I don’t know if you saw the January 19th issue of Entertainment Weekly, but they have a section in their music section, the “Download This” section, and they list the top fourteen tracks of the new year. And you’re right there at number four.

JC: Oh, right on. Yay.

DJ: They say that, uh, “It’s a nervy, poisonous kiss-off to a cheating lover.” That would be the whole thing we just talked about. And, uh, also proof that producer Justin Timberlake, able to do his thing at the mixing board as well as the mike.

JC: He’s a fantastic producer, absolutely.

DJ: How was that - working with him as a producer?

JC: Um, it was fun, man. Uh, you know, it seems like the kid’s talent has no bounds. And you know, we’ve been doing this for years now…

DJ: Yeah.

JC: And uh, one day we were sitting around talking, and he, we just got to chit-chatting and he was just like, “Why don’t we go in the studio?” and it sounded like a good idea. So we popped in, did a record called “God Bless America.” That record turned out well, so then we ended up going back in and uh, this ["Until Yesterday"] was the second record we decided to record. And um, you know, it was like, “You have any ideas?” And I was like, you know, I just wanna do something kind of - again, nervy…

DJ: Right.

JC: Something to push people’s buttons a little bit, and this is what we came up with.

DJ: That’s great. In a little bit we’ll check out some tracks from the soon-to…[refers to audience] uh, yes, they’re all “Yes, yes, please, yes, yes!”

JC: “Yes, yes, yes, yes.”

DJ: We’ll do that in a little bit. Um, a lot of the people in this room grew up with you. I mean, they - you were the - you and all the members of NSYNC were the people they idolized. Was there anybody, growing up, musically, that you idolized?

JC: Um, you know, it’s hard to say. I mean, we were actually just talking about this guy in the car - you know, Bono’s become like an inspiration to the world.

DJ: Yeah.

JC: Um, but he is the guy to me. He’s a fantastic lyricist. Uh, he’s still making records that make you wanna move, they’re inspiring and things like that. So, I definitely think as far as music goes, he’s one of my idols.

DJ: All right. Questions from the group. I can take two before we have to go, okay? Who’s got a question? [To audience member] You don’t got a question? [Laughs] There’s one guy here who, like, totally sticks out in this crowd because he’s, in a polite way…older.

[Audience laughs]

DJ: He’s here with us, though. What’s your question?

Audience member: Just out of curious, what was your inspiration to name your first album Schizophrenic?

JC: Uh, the way the record came about, it was a very experimental record, and uh, it just seemed like all these songs just had very different…each song really just had a very different personality than the next, so that ended up being, you know, having that many different styles and that many different personalities on one record, uh, they had to live together in one body. So it literally just seemed like you’d listen to one song and then you’d jump into a whole ‘nother character, so that’s why it became that way.

DJ: One more question. Oh, it has to be in the back, doesn’t it. I feel like Donahue.

JC: Take a walk. Take a walk!

DJ: “Is the caller there?” All right, make it way back here. What’s your question?

Audience member: Um, are you gonna make a video for “Until Yesterday” and if so, when will it come out?

JC: Um, I’m not - I mean, I’m not sure, obviously, what day it’ll come out, but uh, yeah, it’s in the works. I’m supposed to shoot the video next month. This is, we’re literally right at the beginning of pushing this record ’cause I just finally finished this record. I’m very, very proud of this record. This whole album is just a great-sounding, intelligent pop record. Um, it’s just got great storylines, it’s got great feeling in the music. I put my entire heart into this record. Um, whether it’s fast, whether it’s slow, I just - I put a lot of thought and a lot of effort in it, so I really am proud of the outcome. And uh, yeah, the video will come out just as soon as I shoot it. I’m slated to shoot it in February.

DJ: And so we’re shooting for a March release date, hopefully available ?

JC: Uh, yeah. March, April, yeah.

DJ: [to audience] You guys of course are gonna buy it, right?

Audience: Yeah!

DJ: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah! Okay. Uh, single available now. You can get it on iTunes…

JC: You can grab it on iTunes, yeah. We stuck it out there just to get feedback and things like that.

DJ: Well, Entertainment Weekly likes it. I mean, they gave you an “A” and so I think you got a hit coming on your hands with this new album.

JC: I like it, so…

DJ: Yeah. All right, so, that’s gonna wrap it up for here talking with him on the air. The guys in the Lounge here still hope to spend some time with him, ask some more questions. We’ll get some autographs and also a chance to check out the tracks. JC, thank you so much for comin’ out…

JC: Thanks for having me, guys. I appreciate it very much.

[Audience cheers]
