Kerry Collins: JC, thank you for coming by!

JC: My pleasure, man, my pleasure.

Kerry: Dude, I’m very excited. The new album, uh, what - you know, I want you to tell me about, tell me about the new album.

JC: Okay, uh, well, um, first of all I’m here playing everybody some music and stuff. These guys, they came and they won so I played them a couple tunes tonight. The album is, you know…there’s not a finalized title, but tentatively the album is gonna be called Kate.

Kerry: Kate.

JC: Yes indeed.

Kerry: K-A-T-E?

JC: K-A-T-E.

Kerry: Who’s Kate?

JC: Kate is an imaginary person that I ended up creating an album around.

Kerry: Really?!

JC: Yes.

Kerry: Man, settin’ some high standards, aren’t ya?

JC: Why not. [Laughs] Well, like, the songs are…I wanted to make a record that, you know, people could relate to and things like that, but I wanted to make it interesting as well. And none of the songs are in particular about one person, you know, they’re from maybe a collection of experiences…

Kerry: Mm hm.

JC: So I ended up, you know, each song is kinda like about more than one scenario that’s maybe happened to me at one time or another, and since it’s not about one person I kinda had to dream it into this one person to give the record a focus.

Kerry: One big conglomerate person. All I’m thinking about is, the next step for you is you’re gonna go into, uh, like some sort of like Weird Science, uh, and create an actual body…

JC: [Laughing] No, no, no, I’m not gonna hook it up to a Barbie doll!

Kerry: …and actually create someone.

JC: Essentially, with the record, I mean, that’s my Weird Science. I’ve gone into the studio over the past year and created this person out of thin air.

Kerry: That’s amazing.

JC: Yeah.

Kerry: That’s great. That’s great. So, uh, when is the tentative date that the new album’s gonna drop?

JC: Well, obviously I’m throwing you guys the single, hopefully you guys will play it tonight, and then uh…

Kerry: Of course we’ll play it tonight! We’ll play it in a little bit.

JC: Yeah, yeah, and then the album should be out, like, March. March/April.

Kerry: March or April. Great. Well, JC Chasez is hangin’ out with us. Of course, formerly of NSYNC. We got some winners here in the studio, we’re gonna ask him some questions, and we’ll come right back with JC in just a few minutes on 92 PRO FM.

Kerry: I’m Kerry Collins and we’re gettin’ crazy in the studio ’cause we’re hangin’ out with JC Chasez. Ladies, you excited?

[Audience cheers]

Kerry: Thank you very much. That was a little delayed excitement there for ya.

JC: [Laughs]

Kerry: So where’s Courtney? Courtney, you had a question for JC. Come on up, Courtney. I want you talk right into this mike and uh, what’s your question for JC?

Courtney: Um, I wanted to know if you were planning on going on tour.

JC: Uh, yeah, that’s the goal. Right now since I’m just getting this whole thing started up, I’m running around letting everybody know that I have a record again. And soon after this I’ll start putting together tour dates and stuff like that, you know, I wanna play this stuff live. Even the first single, like, when I was writing it, I already heard it live in my head while I was writing it.

Kerry: Wow, that’s amazing.

JC: And I’ve actually played a couple shows with my buddy Justin. We’ve done a couple shows together and uh, yeah, so, I’ve had the fortunate, I guess, chance to perform with him again, and it’s been a lot of fun.

Kerry: Do you think that you and Justin or you and maybe Lance or somebody, you know, would hook back and just do - not a full NSYNC reunion, but maybe just do like a whole, release a single together at some point?

JC: I think this is probably the closest, you know - we ended up writing this song and producing it together, so I think right now that’s probably about as far as it’s gonna go as far as any kind of reunion goes.

Kerry: Uh huh.

JC: Everybody’s really happy with what they’re doing, you know. Lance is off in Sundance and still doing his movie stuff, and uh…

Kerry: No more space for him, though.

JC: No more space, man. And then Joey and Chris are actually doing TV shows now, and you know, Justin’s on tour and has a great album that everybody seems to be lovin’ right now…

Kerry: Mm hm.

JC: I’m a big fan. And uh, now I’m getting ready to drop my record and I’ve been working on it for the past year, so I really want people to hear this music as well. So everybody’s really happy where they’re at.

Kerry: Awesome. Anyone else have a question for JC? Come on over here. What’s your name? Amanda has a question. Where are you from, Amanda?

Amanda: Providence.

Kerry: All right, what’s your question for JC?

Amanda: What’s your favorite song on your new album?

JC: On my new album? That’s tough to say. I’m still - I’m actually still kinda living with these songs. They’re all still new to me ’cause I just finished writing ‘em, um, so it kinda changes on the daily. I know a lot of people like the song “Kate,” which, you know, I did a song called “Kate” for the record and a lot of people liked that.

Kerry: The fictional woman.

JC: The fictional woman.

Kerry: JC’s fantasy.

JC: I actually, right now I’m kinda partial to a couple of songs. I think one of them is called “Satellite” and it’s a really cool, interesting record. More of an electronic record. And it’s just a metaphor, and I find the song very smart and I like that. I wanted to make a record that can spark interest in people. I didn’t wanna treat my audience like they weren’t intelligent. I wanted to, you know, I wanted them - I wanted to respect my audience and to treat them as an intelligent audience. instead of just, you know, putting the same old cliches together I wanted to put interesting ideas and incorporate it into these stories.

Kerry: You know, I was reading this - I actually went to your Wikipedia page and it actually says that you have described your music as “IPM” - intelligent pop music, or what you just said. It’s like, you wanna make pop music that’s not just, you know, just bubblegum, dumb…

JC: Well, you know, I just feel like anybody can say “We broke up and I hate you,” you know…

Kerry: [Laughs]

JC: …and I’ve heard that song a thousand times, so it’s like…

Kerry: You’ve sung it a thousand times!

JC: Yeah, and everybody has, and there’s nothing wrong with it, because it is something that we all live and we all go through, but I wanted to find an interesting way to say it. I really wanted to a unique way to say it that was completely my own. And this first single, instead of saying “I don’t wanna be with you anymore,” I turned it around and I said, “You know what, I loved you all the way until yesterday.”

Kerry: Mm hm. Gotcha.

JC: It says the same thing, but yet you find it more color - it’s a little bit more colorful. It’s a little bit more thoughtful, and that’s what I did with the record. I tried to make it a thoughtful record.

Kerry: You wanna hear “Until Yesterday”?

JC: Let’s hear it, man.

Kerry: Let’s play it.

JC: This is my record, man!

Kerry: The brand new single from JC Chasez, “Until Yesterday” on 92 PRO FM.

Kerry: From JC Chasez, “Until Yesterday” on today’s hit music, 92 PRO FM. And what do you know, JC hangin’ out in the studio at 92 PRO FM tonight.

JC: Yes indeed.

Kerry: How you doin’, JC?

JC: I’m good, man, I’m good. Happy to be here.

Kerry: Now, I wanted to, uh, ask you about the new album again. You have a couple songs on there, uh, according to your Wikipedia page, one of the tracks is called “God Bless America”…

JC: Yes indeed.

Kerry: Is that the, you know, the regular “God Bless America” or is this a brand new…

JC: This, this is a whole ‘nother thing. This is, uh, it’s our take - it’s another one I did with Justin.

Kerry: Mm hm.

JC: We were sittin’ around the studio and we were like, “You know what, I haven’t heard like a ‘California Girls’ kind of thing in a long time.” The last people to do it were maybe the Beach Boys and David Lee Roth remade it, but nobody’s actually written an original song in a while that kinda is in that genre.

Kerry: Right.

JC: So we decided what would be, like, the next “I wish they all could be California girls.” We kind of went, like, “Man, she -
” and we just kinda were sittin’ around, and we both live in the South and stuff like that, and just thinking of all the funny sayings that everybody has said around us. We’re just like, “God bless America, that woman is beautiful!”

Kerry: [Laughs]

JC: And we were like, “We gotta do a song now!”

Kerry: That’s great.

JC: So that’s how it ended up becoming “God Bless America” - it’s actually just about, you know, how hot a girl is and da da da da, and how there’s no place better to meet a girl than right here.

Kerry: That’s awesome. And another song is called “Better With You.”

JC: “Better With You,” yeah, that song is kinda like a mid-tempo ballad-y kinda thing and that’s just about, you know, that’s your typical “I’m in love and my life is better with you.”

Kerry: Gotcha. Now, who else had a question? Come on over here. What was your name again? Stephanie! Where are you from Stephanie? Stephanie from Providence. What would you like to ask JC Chasez?

Stephanie: Um, I wanna ask you, when you’re on tour, where’s your favorite place to perform?

JC: Um, you know, it’s tough. It’s like, uh, oh. I don’t know, as long as the crowd’s happy, I’m happy, man. I’m most comfortable being in front of the crowd. And you could literally stick me on the center of Antartica and if I’ve got three people there that are willing to listen to my song enthusiastically, I’m gonna jump around like an idiot for ‘em. I would say playing home is, you know, it’s the double-edged sword. It can be the greatest and the worst at the same time, because you’re pulled in so many directions, but yet you’re so happy to be home.

Kerry: Yeah, I’m sure that being home, the pressure is more on you ’cause you wanna make it better for your hometown crowd.

JC: Yes and no. Again, it’s so hard ’cause you’re also trying to spend time with your family ’cause you don’t get to see ‘em as often as you’d like ’cause you’re always traveling, and then your friends wanna pull you in fifty directions as well, so…and yet, yeah, you’re home, so you’re like, “Hey, guys, this is the product of…I’m a product of you guys. I come from you so I’m gonna give you everything that I have.” But me, I like to go out there and give it a thousand percent every night. Like I said, if you guys paid your…if you paid your dollars to come in and see me, I’m gonna give you everything I’ve got. Um, ’cause I’m thankful every day. I know that it’s a gift, you know, this life is temporary and every day is a gift, so I’m thankful every day.

Kerry: Can I ask you a question about your NSYNC days?

JC: You can ask me what you want, man.

Kerry: Will you be honest with me?

JC: Yes, I will be honest with you.

Kerry: Do you swear?

JC: I pinky swear.

Kerry: What song did you end up hating singing? You would be…you would be like, “I don’t wanna sing this song tonight.”

JC: Um…

Kerry: Was there one NSYNC song that you dreaded singing?

JC: You know what, it came in cycles. Like, you know, when we first started, obviously when we had our first album we only had like ten songs to sing…

Kerry: Right.

JC: So, like, you know, every now and then towards the end of the touring for the first album, all those songs drove us nuts because we couldn’t really pick and choose through ‘em because we had to sing them all. Every night. And even in the beginning, you know, you’re hustling so much - we were doing two and three shows a day.

Kerry: Right.

JC: So it was like, you know, I remember days where we would play a matinee, an evening show, and then drive somewhere and play a club at midnight or one in the morning.

Kerry: “It’s the fourth time we sang ‘Tearin’ Up My Heart’! Yay!”

JC: Pretty much so. So, um, you know, but I don’t know if I ever really hated singing anything. I will tell you what killed every time is, you know - but is what we were known for - were those dance breaks. Like every now and then we would put like a dance routine together. And we didn’t mind doin’ it at the top of the show, ’cause everybody has energy at the top of the show!

Kerry: Right.

JC: But an hour and twenty minutes into the show? And you gotta like, you know, jump around and da da da da, and you would do like a full three-minute dance break? That’s called murder.

Kerry: Murder!

JC: It’s called murder. And when we were doing the PopOdyssey show, I think it was really hard too because the stage was just so big. Like, literally after we would do one song…there was a point where we had to run up three flights of stairs to get up to the top and go down and sing the song “Space Cowboy.”

Kerry: Wow.

JC: The run up the stairs has never hurt your side - your ribs and your side. I mean, I - and we had to do it every night. But then the ride down, ’cause all we had to do was take a ride across the rows, we’re like, “Ahhhh.”

Kerry: [Laughs]

JC: “I can sing anything right now! I don’t care!” [Laughs] And, I mean, it was some of the greatest times of my life and I’m thankful for them every day and I had a blast doing ‘em, but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t hard.

Kerry: Absolutely. Definitely was. I gotta take a break…

JC: Mm hm

Kerry: …I wanna come back and talk to you about MusicFreedom and some other things going on in your personal life, and uh, JC Chasez hangin’ out on 92 PRO FM. Ladies, make some noise for JC!

[Audience cheers]

Kerry: Thank you!

Kerry: I’m Kerry Collins, hangin’ out with JC Chasez.

JC: Hey, man.

Kerry: Hi, JC.

JC: How you doin’?

Kerry: Let’s talk about, um, musicfreedom.com.

JC: Okay.

Kerry: Uh, tell me about it.

JC: Well, it’s a website that I created for um, for small bands that - most are unsigned and some are on very small indie labels. And uh, what I wanted to do was create like a, a forum for bands to put their music up and hopefully be heard. What I did is, I also made it very user-friendly for them; they can specialize their own pages, obviously, but it’s also a very informative site. Like, uh, if A&R people want to take a look around and find out, you know, who’s checking them out, like what areas…like, say, there’s a couple thousand bands on there. And they’re like, “Well, you know, who’s getting downloaded and who’s downloading it?” If they’re a band from Detroit but they’re getting all their downloads in Sacramento, they can know that and they’ll know where their audience is and so on and so forth. So an A&R guy can look at it and say, “Well, I like this band.” And uh, you know, if the band says “Okay,” “Well, let’s set up a showcase,” they can set up their showcase in Sacramento instead of where they’re at…

Kerry: Right.

JC: …where their core audience is.

Kerry: That’s great. That’s great.

JC: It’s a very…

Kerry: You could possibly discover the next NSYNC!

JC: Well, you never know, man! But I wanted to make a site that was music-friendly for bands, you know. I know a lot of them are trying to be music-friendly for retailers…

Kerry: Right.

JC: …for the right reasons, because you know, these guys work hard on their music so, you know, you should pay for it, but at the same time I wanted to make it friendly for bands to get discovered in the first place. And so I’ve kind of put together this site with a couple friends of mine that were producers and engineers and things like that, and we just kind of sat around and go, “Let’s gripe for an hour, and then figure out a way that we could try and fix it on our own.”

Kerry: Right.

JC: And that’s what we came up with.

Kerry: Who has the next question for JC Chasez? What’s your name? Amy! Where are you from, Amy?

Amy: Warwick.

Kerry: What is your question?

Amy: I wanted to know, if you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?

JC: Um, you know, I don’t know. I don’t really tend to think about stuff like that too much. If it happens…I’m kind of more of a fly by the seat of your pants kind of guy. It’s like, uh, if I meet somebody and we get along, great, and we talk about music and get inspired by each other, I’m down to do it. But I’m not about forcing anything. I don’t wanna go in and say, “Okay, well, if I go in with this guy, I need to write a song just like this.” I don’t think that that’s what makes a good record. I think you need to be inspired in order for a record to really connect. Um, that’s just my opinion, you know, there’s ideas of right and wrong and I tend to believe that, you know, the music that I write that is good is something that I’ve been inspired by and not something that I’ve set out to, saying “I have to write a song that sounds like this.” Um, because it’ll sound like that, but it won’t be, you know, what it should be.

Kerry: Right. Now I know you were one of the, uh…you wrote songs for NSYNC.

JC: Mm hm.

Kerry: How many songs did you write? Or co-write?

JC: For those guys? Uh…for us…

Kerry: For those guys.

JC: [Jokingly] “For those guys?”

Kerry: [Laughs]

JC: Uh, I don’t know, a few. Like, uh, probably like seven or ten - something like…

Kerry: Any, any of the big hits?

JC: Um, no, not any of the…we…I worked…like I said, I just worked on everything. Uh, the stuff I did - I wrote a couple of them with Justin, actually, uh, as well, and then, you know, he wrote some and I wrote some.

Kerry: Can I talk, ask you something about your personal life?

JC: Yeah, ask me anything you want, man. Ask me anything you want.

Kerry: Eva Longoria?

JC: What about her?

Kerry: Dated her?

JC: I did.

Kerry: How is she?

JC: She’s a wonderful, wonderful girl. And she’s fixin’ to get married.

Kerry: Tara Reid?

JC: Uh, Tara Reid is a very nice girl.

Kerry: So you’re, you know…

JC: But I did not date her.

Kerry: You did not date her?

JC: No. Everybody…

Kerry: Wikipedia says you were linked to her!

JC: We were linked to her, exactly. Uh, we were friends for a while, um, we just ended up hanging out for a while. She wasn’t shooting a movie at the time and I was gettin’ ready to do all my stuff, and um…

Kerry: As far as all the sites, you know, even like perezhilton…

JC: Well, because all you have to do nowadays is stand next to somebody and you’re dating.

Kerry: That’s true.

JC: It’s kinda unfair to either person because if they are dating somebody and you’re standing next to somebody else, all of a sudden you have to deal with that at home, and that’s fun. But uh, no, I mean, we were just friends, you know, nothing ever really happened or anything like that. She actually did me a huge favor when that “Blowin’ Me Up” video came about. The whole reason she shot the video was because the morning of the shoot for the video, the girl that I had booked to do the video was in Paris and she couldn’t get back over to the United States.

Kerry: Wow.

JC: And so, you know, she called me up, she said, “What are you doin’ today?” I’m like, “I’m shootin’ a video.” She’s like “Oh, we can’t hang out?” “Uh, not right now. It’s a night shoot but I gotta find another girl. Like, I just got a call half an hour ago from the agency so they’re sending me over comp cards of people and I gotta see how they dance and da da da da da….”

Kerry: Right.

JC: And she was like, “I’ll do it!” I go, “Huh?” She goes, “Yeah, I’ll do it. Don’t sweat it.” I go, “You sure?” She goes, “Yeah.”

Kerry: That was great!

JC: I go, “Cool. I’ll see you at nine!” [Laughs]

Kerry: Saved you at the last second, right.

JC: Yeah, she did. She saved me quite a bit of a headache, so you know…she’s always been kind to me, so…

Kerry: That’s great. Now you did have a long-term relationship with Bobbie Thomas, the editor for InTouch Weekly.

JC: Uh, I did. I did.

Kerry: Now, that’s gotta be great, you know. Did you guys like talk about all the gossip that’s goin’ on, you know?

JC: You know what, when I was dating her she wasn’t necessarily into that stuff. When I was dating her, she was a counsellor.

Kerry: Oh, really?

JC: Yeah, so uh, and uh, she also did…she was starting a self-help kind of television show at the time. So she was pitching that. Her journalism and stuff like that kinda came along later.

Kerry: Gotcha, gotcha. Well you know what, I gotta play your boy. I gotta play Justin.

JC: Play him loud!

Kerry: I will play him loud! We’ll come right back with JC Chasez. Hang on for a few more minutes?

JC: Absolutely.

Kerry: Awesome. JC Chasez, hangin’ out on 92 PRO FM.

Kerry: We’re hangin’ out with, uh, Justin Timberlake’s boy, JC Chasez!

JC: Yeah, man.

Kerry: He’s been hangin’ out all hour, I wanna thank you for comin’ out and spendin’ some time with us. Uh, your new single “Until Yesterday” - it’s uh, it’s at radio now, correct?

JC: I’m handin’ it to you today.

Kerry: This is it, I have it…

JC: You have it in your hand.

Kerry: Awesome. You know what, I’ll play it again a little bit later tonight.

JC: I love that story. [Laughs]

Kerry: So um, all right, we’ll have another question for JC. Come on over here. It’s Courtney.

Courtney: Right.

Kerry: What’s your next question?

Courtney: What CD is in your CD player right now?

JC: Um…oh, wow, good question. I’ve been…

Kerry: Oh come on, you’ve heard that one before! Come on. [Laughs]

JC: No, I know, but you know what, right now, uh, it’s always a tough one because it’s kinda like, “What am I listening to today?” ‘Cause I have a lot of music, you know, I love music, it’s what I do. Uh, today I was actually talking to a couple of my friends. I think I’m on that Body Rocks CD right now. This girl Luciana sings a song called “Yeah Yeah” and she sang over a Body Rocks track. And it’s really really cool.

Kerry: What else you into?

JC: Um, what else am I into? Mm, I like the Nelly Furtado record, I know a lot of cats like that. I think a lot of people are actually sleeping on the Pink record here. I like it, I like the record as a whole. I wasn’t fond of maybe the first single, but the record as a whole is a pretty good record. And then, uh, I don’t know, I think the Body Rocks record and probably the Nelly Furtado. And obviously, you know, I’m gonna support Justin ’cause that’s my man.

Kerry: Of course. Come on, tell me the truth. Is “What Goes Around Comes Around” - is that, uh, anti-Britney song #2?

JC: No, no, that song has nothing to do with Britney, actually.

Kerry: Cameron?

JC: But I know who it…no, it has nothing to do with Cameron either.

Kerry: Come on, man! You snowin’ me?

JC: But I do know who it is about.

Kerry: Are you gonna spill it?

JC: No.

Kerry: Oh, come on, man!

JC: But it is about somebody, actually, and it’s somebody that’s very close to him.

Kerry: Yeah. How do, how do you feel about, you know, when you go on all these gossip sites like perezhilton.com and popsugar.com, gossip everyday about, you know, you - not necessarily about you - mostly about Justin and Lance, especially with the year that Lance has had. And uh, sometimes you’ll get into it a little bit.

JC: Yeah, yeah.

Kerry: How does that make you feel? How does it make them feel?

JC: It just depends. I mean, as long as it’s…I would say as long as it’s not damaging…I think when it’s outright mean, obviously it’s a bit hurtful. Sometimes you have to turn the other cheek and sometimes you gotta fight back, you know. And in some cases both of those guys have. Sometimes they turn the other cheek and sometimes they go, “Look, man, you know what, I’m not gonna let you sit here and just talk about me, disrespect me.” Especially when it’s an outright lie. I think that’s the part that bothers me the most, is that people can actually get away with telling an outright lie.

Kerry: Right.

JC: And I don’t think that that’s right at all. I think, you know what, if there’s some validity to the story and you know you did something wrong, you kinda have to swallow that pill, fine. But when it’s an outright lie, it’s really not fair. And I know the old saying is, you know, innocent until proven guilty, but that just doesn’t seem to be the way people approach things anymore.

Kerry: Not in the gossip world!

JC: They say, “Okay, if it’s in the paper or if it’s on TV, it must be real.”

Kerry: Guilty until proven innocent.

JC: Yeah, so I think that part of it is unfair. But at the end of the day, you know, it just is what it is. Don’t put yourself in a bad situation, I guess, and people won’t be able to say anything.

Kerry: And wear underwear when you go out!

JC: And wear some drawers, you know. Yeah.

[Laughter]

Kerry: JC Chasez, his new single “Until Yesterday,” we’ll play it again a little bit later tonight. The new album yet to be titled, uh, it’s comin’ out in a few months?

JC: Yeah. Tentatively called Kate, it’ll probably be…

Kerry: Tentatively called Kate, JC’s imaginary, uh, fantasy woman.

JC: There you go.

Kerry: Is it…

JC: March/April.

Kerry: March/April.

JC: March/April. Somewhere in there.

Kerry: Is Kate’s real - is her real name Katherine, or…

JC: No, no, it’s just Kate.

Kerry: Just Kate?

JC: Just Kate.

Kerry: Does Kate have like a favorite show?

JC: Kate, uh, I don’t know if Kate watches TV, actually!

Kerry: [Laughs]

JC: I don’t know if Kate watches TV. Kate’s crazy, ’cause she can be sweet and she can be, you know, she can be mean, so, just a little bit of everything. Everything in between. There you go, poetry!

Kerry: JC Chasez, thank you for comin’ out. 92 PRO FM.

JC: Thanks.

Kerry: Ladies, make some noise!
