A-Game: Okay, not often do I get just, like, surrounded by a sea of women. This does not happen to me! And there’s only one reason why this is happening. Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for JC Chasez.
[Applause and cheers]
JC: It’s cool to have live claps in your show, huh?
A-Game: Yeah, it doesn’t happen like this. It never happens like this!
JC: Well, it looks like you’ve got a nice group of people here with you.
A-Game: Absolutely. And they definitely wanted to be here, they wanted to meet you. And uh, first off, welcome. Thanks for taking time out. I know you’ve been out on the road today.
JC: I have.
A-Game: I mean, this is like your third stop today?
JC: This is my third stop today. Well, I started in one city. It’s my third city but my second stop.
A-Game: Second stop, third city. Wow. How does it feel to be back out here doin’ all this again?
JC: You know what, it’s actually been a lot of fun, man. I’ve been, you know, pretty much locked in the studio for the past year, so it’s actually nice to be able to go out and see other human beings…
A-Game: Right.
JC: …you know, other than the same five people that you see in the studio.
A-Game: [Laughs]
JC: And uh, so it’s been great for me. I’m excited to be out here.
A-Game: Since you’re talking [?], who were the main five people in the studio?
JC: Um, well, excuse me [clears throat].
A-Game: No problem.
JC: Yeah, working on this record, uh, I’ve worked with a few people. Um, the first single is called Until Yesterday.
A-Game: Which we’ll play a little later on.
JC: Which I’m hand-delivering to you, sir!
A-Game: Yes, as a matter of fact I’ve already heard it, we wanna talk about that, we’ll get into it a little later on.
JC: Okay, um, but I actually co-wrote that with my buddy Justin Timberlake…
A-Game: Absolutely.
JC: …who is just, like, setting the world on fire at the moment.
A-Game: Isn’t he, though?
JC: And you know, rightfully so, man. The kid is so talented and he’s so hard-working, and uh, it couldn’t happen to a better human being. Um, as well as working with him, I worked with his buddy Timbaland.
A-Game: Right.
JC: And I ended up working with my good friend Dallas Austin…
A-Game: Yes.
JC: …who’s a fantastic songwriter and producer. And uh, so I’ve had a lot of fun on this record.
A-Game: Who approached you? Can I ask that? Did you approach JT or did uh, you know…
JC: You know, we were just hangin’ out. We were just kinda like shootin’ the breeze, and it just kinda popped out and…you know, it was just a matter of, you know, why don’t we get together and write a tune? And it was like, yeah, why don’t we?
A-Game: Yeah.
JC: We haven’t done it in a long time, and - well, you know, what some people consider a long time, I guess.
A-Game: Oh, yeah.
JC: Just a couple years, and um, it was nice man, because again, we’ve lived separate lives for a few years at that point, and we came back with new perspectives, you know. Before that we’d been traveling on the road and we were, you know, finishing each other’s sentences at that point…
A-Game: [Laughs]
JC: ‘Cause we were together everyday for ten years, you know.
A-Game: Right.
JC: And at that point, you know, it’s like we already know each other’s stories. And yet, when we went into the studio this time, we both had a brand new set of stories to tell each other, so we were excited to hear these things. And uh, so it made the music exciting. So I think the product of the sessions were just, they were awesome.
A-Game: Since you mentioned separate lives, I gotta ask because, I mean, all five of you have gone on to do your own things. And it’s like - like you said, Justin’s tearing up the world right now, no question about it.
JC: Yeah.
A-Game: You know, um, Joey’s doing well for himself as well, you know, with his acting thing.
JC: Yeah.
A-Game: You’ve got your thing going on, Lance is doing his thing.
JC: Yeah.
A-Game: The one thing I’ve noticed is that, when it comes to profiles, Justin’s through the roof. You’ve managed to keep kind of a low profile. Has that been on purpose, or…?
JC: Um, you know what, it’s not even something I think about, you know.
A-Game: Okay.
JC: I guess, uh, it’s just the way it goes. I mean, he’s got a record out so people are paying attention to it, so uh…
A-Game: Right.
JC: And uh, you know, and all that. I don’t even think about that kind of thing, I guess.
A-Game: The reason I bring it up is because sometimes it’s like, I’m scanning through the New York Post and there’s Lance getting mentioned on Page Six or something, and again I guess that comes with the territory. You guys are always gonna be, you know, in the tabloids, what have you. But it’s like, you specifically, you don’t see your name poppin’ up a lot.
JC: I don’t really look for trouble, either, you know.
A-Game: [Laughs] No, that’s for sure!
JC: So uh, you know, I’m, hopefully I won’t be going to rehab anytime soon.
A-Game: [Laughs] Right.
JC: I don’t really - I don’t want the focus of my, I guess, you know, celebrity, I guess that’s what you wanna call it, I don’t know. But um, I want it to be my music.
A-Game: Right.
JC: And I don’t really - you know, that, to me, that’s what I wanna be known for. I don’t wanna be known as, you know, the guy who broke up with this person or the guy who dates this girl or, you know, the guy that has been pulled over, or whatever it is.
A-Game: Right, exactly.
JC: I wanna be known for my music. And so I don’t go out of my way to keep my business personal, but I don’t go out of my way to put it in the papers, either.
A-Game: Exactly.
JC: Again, it’s not something I really spend a lot of time thinking about, but it just is what it is.
A-Game: More power to you, my friend. Uh, not only the singing, though. Let’s talk about acting for a little bit, ’cause you’ve been dabbling in this now. Not just Justin.
JC: I did one show!
A-Game: But it got you some attention.
JC: Yeah, and you know what, it was a lot of fun. It really was. I got to be on a show with the beautiful and talented Jennifer Love Hewitt.
A-Game: Ghost Whisperer. Good show.
JC: Yeah, a great show. And great group of people. The people that she has around that show, the producers and everybody, are just wonderful people. I had a fantastic experience. You know, all I had to do was play bass and say a couple lines.
A-Game: Right.
JC: So it was a relatively fun and easy gig, even though I was pretty nervous, you know.
A-Game: Right.
JC: I hadn’t done it in a while. But I had a lot of fun doing it and, you know, I would love to do something like that in the future.
A-Game: Oh definitely, definitely. And I caught the, uh, on Youtube, I caught the little previews. I’m watching there and I’m like, oh, you and Three Days Grace. I’m like going, interesting combination for the show, by the way, too.
JC: Yeah, absolutely. You know, the producers put it together, so…
A-Game: JC Chasez, my guest here on 93.7 WSTW. By the way, I went to your MySpace account.
JC: Okay.
A-Game: Now this is interesting. For those who don’t know, if you check out how many friends he has?
JC: I have a lot.
A-Game: Yeah, you’re pushing six figures, bud! Almost a hundred thousand friends on his MySpace account.
JC: Yeah, well, you know, and hopefully growing. It’s a wild thing, and I’ve noticed it actually being back out on the road more than ever. It’s like, it really has…you know, you think that…everybody says “Oh, it’s got millions of viewers,” but I really don’t, you know, uh, I’m not exposed to that. I mean, of course I’m like anybody else. I go on it and I check it and it says “friends,” but you don’t really know the impact that it’s having. At least I didn’t really, at first, until now that I’ve been out on the road and coming out and meeting people. It’s like, it’s part of their dialogue.
A-Game: Really is. Really is.
JC: They’re like, “It’s playing on my page! My MySpace page!” I’m like, “Oh, okay!” You know, usually it’s like I can’t wait to put their computer on my picture or whatever, or like show my friends…
A-Game: Mm hm.
JC: But it’s like, that’s automatic. You can show your friends by putting it up on this thing. So it’s a wild thing. It’s just like, “That’s gonna be my wallpaper! That’s gonna be my MySpace picture!” I’m just like, “Wow, that’s wild.”
A-Game: Was there any trepidation while you were setting that up?
JC: Uh, no, not at all. Um, you know, I was pretty late in the game to join. I mean, all my friends were already on. I was like, “Okaaaay, I’ll do it.”
A-Game: [Laughs]
JC: And um, you know, I can’t get on it everyday, but I have to say I have - one of my best friends is helping me with it.
A-Game: Oh cool.
JC: Because, um, you know, I just don’t have time to do it all the time, but they’re very helpful. I’m on it about once a week, but they do the daily…you know, I’ll just…they’ll call me up and they’re like, “What’d you do today, just so I can let everybody know where you’re at?” And I’m like, “Okay, today I’m traveling, I’m riding in a car and doing an interview in Delaware.”
A-Game: Right.
JC: And uh, you know, “There’s gonna be contest winners,” and then, you know, she’ll blog it up. Put it up there to let everybody know what I’m doing and it’s great.
A-Game: This is my guest for the Drive at Five today, it’s JC Chasez on 93.7 WSTW. I wanna talk about a few more things, go a little bit into your past.
JC: Yeah.
A-Game: Talk about the single, ’cause there’s a couple of influences that suprised me when I was hearing the single, so…
JC: Okay.
A-Game: …definitely wanna fire that at you. And ladies, if you have any questions, please fire when ready when we get the chance. And if you have any other questions, I’ve got two that came in from email. So keep sending them via email. agame @ wstw.com. Let’s check in with Traffic Watch. This is my guest, JC Chasez, taking time out to talk about his new single and everything else that is your life these days.
JC: Guess so, yeah.
A-Game: Let me ask you this.
JC: Mm hm.
A-Game: The most frequently asked question in the whole time that you’ve been doing these interviews?
JC: Uh, well there’s a few. Um, you know, when I used to tour with the guys the most frequently asked question was “How’d you guys get started?”
A-Game: Right.
JC: And then now, I would say the, um…I mean, there’s a few. A lot of people always ask, you know, “Are you guys going to get back together?”
A-Game: Right.
JC: And things like that. And uh, as of right now nobody’s thinking about it at all.
A-Game: Everybody seems wrapped up in what they’re doing.
JC: Yeah, yeah.
A-Game: Which is a good thing.
JC: Which is great.
A-Game: Yeah.
JC: Everybody…’cause I think the things that everybody’s doing are great things. And another - I was saying, one of the only other, like, I mean, you know, it’s usually nothing except for like, “Are you dating anybody?”
A-Game: Yeah. I’m sure these ladies would like to know the answer to that one. I’m sure!
JC: I’m not dating anybody, I’m not trying to even deal with it right now.
A-Game: And half of the women are smiling in this room, by the way, JC! [Laughs] The reason I brought that up is I was gonna ask this question. I’m figuring, oh God, he’s probably had to ask this about Mickey…
JC: You can ask me anything you want, man.
A-Game: Which is cool, which is cool! But you know, it’s always been a curiosity, because the Disney Channel is so huge.
JC: Yeah.
A-Game: And you were kind of on the ground floor with the New Mickey Mouse Club and you were kind of a part of that.
JC: Yeah.
A-Game: What was that experience like?
JC: You know what, it was a great experience, man. That’s really when I found out how much I really enjoyed music. I was around a group of kids that had the same interests as me.
A-Game: Right.
JC: Before, when I was growing up in the neighborhood, it was kinda like, you know, uh, it just wasn’t the popular thing. It was more about you would go out and buy the records and you were just supposed to like ‘em, and you didn’t have to have aspirations to do anything like that.
A-Game: Mm hm.
JC: And here I was, thrown in with a group of people that had been doing it, really, you know, since they were born, you know, all those kids, and I was kinda like a late bloomer. But it was a fantastic experience. Those kids were great and I’ll always have them in my heart for the rest of my life, you know. They helped me find myself.
A-Game: It’s amazing, because I think about, if that show were on now, just the way the Disney Channel is - I mean, it was pretty big, [but] it would just be humongous at this point. Especially with the group of people you worked with.
JC: Yeah, I mean if you really think about it, you’re talking about, you know, Keri Russell. You’re talking about Ryan Gosling, who’s, you know, nominated for awards…
A-Game: Thank you! I was about to say, Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling. Bravo. I have not seen it, it’s on my list of like, I’ve gotta see Half Nelson now.
JC: Absolutely. And then you’ve got, you know, obviously Britney Spears, which is uh, a topic of conversation…
A-Game: [Laughs]
JC: You’ve got Christina Aguilera who’s unbelievably talented. You’ve got Mr. Justin Timberlake who’s, you know, unbelievably talented. You’ve got myself trying to make a living.
A-Game: [Laughs]
JC: So uh, so yeah, it’s really, it’s a heck of a show. And there’s many more, by the way, that have gone on to do things in the business and things like that. But um, just a really great group of people and I’m thankful for every one of them.
A-Game: So right there, like you were saying, you discovered the whole thing. But was there a part of you that was saying, “Okay. Acting? Singing? Acting? Singing?” during the whole thing?
JC: The minute - when I did that show, I knew. I knew after being there just for a little bit that music was my passion.
A-Game: Right.
JC: It’s just like, it was the place that intrigued me the most. It was the place that drove me to be better, and uh, I just, I loved everything about it.
A-Game: What’s the hardest thing now, being a solo artist, not having the guys around you? Just now knowing it’s like, “Okay, now it’s me. I’m on my own doing this.”
JC: Yeah, you know, um, I don’t know, I would say maybe just the schedule, you know. It’s just a matter of when there are other guys there, you don’t necessarily have to do every interview. You can be like, “Look man, you two guys go do this interview and we’ll - three go do this interview,” and you can literally split it up and knock out two interviews at the same time instead of having to do, you know, two in a row or, say, you know. I mean, hey man, it was great to, when we were performing, to be able to…while one guy, especially if it’s a ballad, you know, we could sit down for a minute and breathe, man.
A-Game: [Laughs]
JC: We jumped around so much and it was a matter of - that was our chance to, you know - all we had to was come in on my background part for a second and we could breathe, breathe, breathe. But really, other than that, no, it’s still a game and it’s something that I love to do. And if you love to do it, you’ll put the time and the work and the effort in it.
A-Game: You say it so well because when I heard the single Until Yesterday - since we’re about to talk about this - you shocked me. I did not expect…it was like, I’m hearing the sound to this and I’m going, “What?!”
JC: Yeah.
A-Game: ‘Cause I gotta admit, you have this preconceived notion, almost. It’s not fair!
JC: Yeah, yeah.
A-Game: But, you know, I’m going, “Okay, JC Chasez’s got a new single. All right. Am I expecting something that’s sorta NSYNC-esque, or is it something that’s gonna be like Burning [Blowin'] Me Up with Her Love again?” And then I hear this and I just went, “Okay. Knock me on my butt. Nicely done.” The arrangement alone…
JC: Yeah.
A-Game: Who came up with the…obviously this is your baby.
JC: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. When I worked with Justin, he really put on the producer cap. We wrote it together, but it was more about, you know, he wanted to get the best out of me.
A-Game: Mm hm.
JC: And uh, so the idea came from - I came in with a line, the tagline itself. I was like, there’s something about this line that I think is special. And the tagline is, you know, “I loved you all the way until yesterday.”
A-Game: And that’s a very heavy thing. And I’m gonna say that, when we play this song, you’re gonna hear the words. This is heavy. No question about that. I mean, where do you draw on something like that?
JC: Well, you know, I wanted to tell a great story, and that line already is colorful…
A-Game: True.
JC: …right from jump. So it’s like, okay, there’s million ways to say “Get away from me. I don’t want to be with you anymore.” And we’ve heard a lot of them, you know what I mean? But this, to me, it felt colorful. And, you know, just the tagline alone, it inspired me to write a very colorful story.
A-Game: Good way of putting it.
JC: So um, so I wanted to create something dramatic, you know, ’cause it’s a dramatic and colorful statement.
A-Game: Yes.
JC: So I wanted to create a dramatic but colorful story. So it’s harsh and yet it’s so outlandish it’s almost funny in a way. It felt like the story that I was telling was a bit campy but serious, so some of the influence there is kinda like Freddie Mercury. He would always tell like these great stories in all his songs and yet they would be so melodic and yet so powerful. And so it ended up kind of, uh…when the record was done, you know, I guess at the end of the day you could feel that influence. It wasn’t intentional at first, and then all of a sudden it just kind of evolved into this thing, so yeah.
A-Game: It’s funny you mentioned Freddie Mercury, ’cause that was - the two things that I caught is like there’s a little bit of Queen, a little bit of that ELO with some of the harmony and arrangement going on.
JC: Yeah.
A-Game: I mean, what were you growing up listening to, ’cause I gotta wonder how this is comin’ out of you.
JC: Yeah, you know what though, I think that we’re - this just a, now this is just an observation on the side…
A-Game: Okay.
JC: I really think that this generation right now is part of a communication age, and I really don’t think that anybody listens to one style of music anymore.
A-Game: I would agree with that, yeah.
JC: I think that everybody’s exposed to a lot now because of all the forms of communication that we have, and so I’m no different, man. I listen to this kind of music and that kind of music and every kind of music. You know, maybe it’s because I have ADD…
A-Game: [Laughs]
JC: …I don’t know! But you know, I do, I like changing it up. And so that style was inspired - it felt strong to me. It felt powerful to me.
A-Game: Mm hm.
JC: It felt like it moved and it felt smart, and that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to make a fun, intelligent record, and I feel like I accomplished it.
A-Game: Let’s check it out. It’s called Until Yesterday. Here’s the debut from JC Chasez here on 93.7 WSTW.
[Until Yesterday is played]
A-Game: That “ooh ah” at the end is so Queen.
JC: [Laughs]
A-Game: And I love it. I think it’s great. JC Chasez, my guest in the studio during the Drive at Five today. I know he’s got a busy schedule but if I can wrap it up, I got a few really good email questions that have come in.
JC: Wow. You can ask me anything.
A-Game: And uh this comes in from CM, she’s listening out of Wilmington. What is your vocal range?
JC: Uh, I have no idea.
A-Game: Really? [Laughs]
JC: I sing from the bottom to the top, how’s that?
A-Game: There you go, I like that.
JC: I don’t know the exact range. Some days are better than others, that’s for sure.
A-Game: This question comin’ in: You collaborated with Carlos Santana on If I Don’t. Will it be included on the new album? This one comes from Alice.
JC: Uh, that’s not going on my record, no. That might be something that he does something with later on.
A-Game: Right.
JC: We just did, we did that record, uh, it was my honor and privilege, obviously…
A-Game: Yeah, because anybody that gets invited to work with Carlos…you know, the last two CDS alone…
JC: You just jump at the chance.
A-Game: Oh, had to. Had to.
JC: So uh, it was a fun song to sing and I was really thankful for the opportunity. And it sounded really good, so I hope you do get to hear it.
A-Game: Oh yeah, definitely. So we’ll keep our fingers crossed that maybe, just maybe Santana will have a new CD out and then we’ll see you on there. Uh, this comes in - her handle is LilSyncLover. That’s a good handle. [Laughs]
JC: There you go.
A-Game: And she goes: Agame, if you could ask JC - and a couple of fans would like to know this - what happened to his infamous Leo pendant that he used to wear until recently last year?
JC: I cut it off this summer. I’ve been wearing it for over ten years, maybe even fifteen.
A-Game: Wow.
JC: And I went to do my photo shoot for this album, I was shooting it right around…at the end of summer, and I’d just finished taking all those and I was like, “You know what?” It was just time. I’d been wearing it and it had been something…it’s still dear to me and I still have it, but it was actually kind of significant to me for, this is a new record, this is a new me, you know. I cut my hair off after…because I had long hair for the last record…
A-Game: Right.
JC: …and you know, I’ve had it short for a little while, but that was kind of like the last thing. It was kind of like, all right, it’s a new me. I wanted to approach everything with a fresh point of view. And it’s something even that small, to me, when I looked in the mirror everyday it was always there, and now it’s something different to me.
A-Game: Mm hm.
JC: And change is a good thing, you know.
A-Game: Absolutely.
JC: So uh, just something that small, believe it or not, was like one of those things. It was like, “Aaahhh. It’s fresh and new!”
A-Game: [Laughs]
JC: So uh, yeah. I cut it off some time in August.
A-Game: One last question, ’cause it’s been probably the most-asked question. As a matter of fact, Eva is chiming in from Belgium, I’ve gotten emails from England…
JC: Wow.
A-Game: Um, basically asking about touring. US, overseas, what’s the plan?
JC: The goal..right now the most important thing to me is uh, is delivering this record.
A-Game: Mm hm.
JC: And uh, this is part of why I’m here, is really…I’m about…to me, this record is a musical record, and I know there’s a lot of avenues to get your music out right now. A lot people use TV and a lot of people use, you know, other sources.
A-Game: YouTube is a good example
JC:Absolutely, and things like that. But you know, music is made for radio.
A-Game: Yeah.
JC: You know? Radio is music and music is radio to me. And I really wanted to solidify that for this record. I really wanted to get back to the radio. And that’s why I came, you know, everywhere, or I’m coming everywhere, ’cause I want to establish that connection. It is the most important connection to me with this record. It’s about being here with these guys, the fans, you know. I wanna know who’s listening to this record…
A-Game: Sure.
JC: …and things like that. And I wanna know who’s playing the record. And it’s important to me, it really, really is. And that’s why I’m here. Again, I made this record because it’s something that I’m passionate about, and in the way it makes me feel, and I know, you know…it’s the greatest feeling in the world. The first time I heard my song on the radio I was just like, I lost my mind, dude.
A-Game: [Laughs]
JC: And I was like, when I put this record together I imagined, you know, performing it live in front of an audience and I imagined it, you know, what people would be doing while they’re in their cars. Are they screaming at the top of their lungs and stuff like that. So it was important to me to come out here and do this. And so I’m really excited. And I’ll continue to, like I said, support you guys here…
A-Game: Sure.
JC: …’cause I believe that, you know, radio really is the platform for music. So I’m happy that you guys are playing the song and I’m happy to be here.
A-Game: And I’m very happy you took time out and made the stop here, my friend. Thank you so much. Come back any time, you can take over this show any time!
JC: Great, love it.
A-Game: JC Chasez, ladies and gentlemen!
