Phone interview with KZZP Kiss 104.7 in Arizona, 1/24/08
JC called in to tell DJs Johnjay and Rich about “America’s Best Dance Crew.” He also spoke freely about his experience as an adopted child. Download/listen to the interview at the station’s website
Partial transcript:
JC: The show’s great…it’s all about crews and breakdancing and things like that, which uh, there’s a couple dance shows out there obviously, but I feel like this one is more in touch with a generation that, you know, is young. And it’s real, you know, it’s a very real situation, and it’s all about kind of making it on your own. These kids really have to make it on their own, which I think is great. It shows a work ethic and a drive not just to do what everybody else tells you, but to take the initiative and go out there and make something for yourself.
…
DJ: I only thought dance crews existed in the movies, I’ll be honest with you.
JC: Not at all, man. I mean, you know, that’s part of like…when I grew up, it was kind of like the coolest thing was all these kids, you know, would be on there…it’s a way for kids to show off to each other and things like that.
Former Disney stars are making ‘Mickey’ proud

…What made an innocuous kids show such a magic kingdom for talent? Who better to ask than the casting director who discovered them all?
“I was always looking for kids that were average and green, with exceptional talent,” Matt Casella tells Newsday from his home in Sherman Oaks, Calif. “If I wanted polish, I’d have done the casting in L.A. These were ones that kids could relate to.”
…”If one kid from the show made it, they’d say it was great. If two made it, that was really great. Three, four or five? Either there was something in the water, or the guy who cast them knew what he was doing,” Casella says with a laugh. “I’m incredibly proud of them all.”
’90s-era Mousketeer bios:
J.C. CHASEZ
Mousketeer moment — “I found J.C. in D.C. He was crashing the audition with a friend. He was called J.C. because there was already a Josh on the show. During a break, I asked, ‘Do you sing?’ So I cleared the room and he sang Richard Marx’s ‘Right Here Waiting.’ It was incredible.”
Grown-up highlight — ‘N Sync sells millions of records.
Turning Disney in his grave — Dated Eva Longoria. Even dead guys are jealous.

MMC/JC mention in Ryan Gosling article

…The series is legendary now—a showbiz-kid Manhattan Project with a cast that included the precociously stage-parented likes of Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera. And what happened next was probably inevitable. The Mouse Club’s producers told Gosling that under no circumstances, not over Walt’s dead, possibly frozen body would he be allowed to do anything resembling the Move on the Disney Channel; then Gosling refused to learn to do anything else. They couldn’t fire him—Gosling says they’d sunk too much money into promoting the presence of a Canadian in the cast—but they didn’t do much else with him, either, and so he spent a couple of seasons dancing at the edge of the frame. Somebody like future ‘NSYNC-er J.C. Chasez would be Gladys and he’d be a Pip.

Mouse Tale
by Stacey Hudson
[Executive producer Steve Clements] launched careers with his successful formula: Keri Russell and J.C. Chasez, along with lesser-known but still successful entertainers such as musician Tony Lucca and actress Nikki DeLoach. Five members of the show broke off and formed the musical group The Party, and released four full-length albums. They had a radio hit of the Dokken cover “In My Dreams.” Tabloid fodder Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling came shortly after he exited the show. Little-known fact: Jessica Simpson and Matt Damon were both rejected by the show.
…J.C. Chasez broke off from MMC to start n*Sync with newer cast member Justin Timberlake. There were “no strings attached” to their original agreement, but the group met global superstardom. Timberlake is serving up hash at a diner somewhere, of course, poor guy. Chasez, on the other hand, has released two solo albums and found success as a songwriter and as a producer for other musicians.
